Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co. — a manufacturer of dry freight vans, reefers, flatbeds and Tautliner curtain-sided trailers – today announced the launch of the next generation D-X product, the
4000D-X® Composite™, an innovative composite wall trailer. Production of the new 2010 model year trailer will begin in January 2009 at two of the company’s manufacturing facilities: Paragould AR and Glade Spring VA.

The newly-designed standard side wall of the 4000D-X Composite™ offers the same durability traits of a common plate trailer, plus such added performance characteristics as enhanced payload carrying capability, load securement versatility and long life expectancy.

The lower tare weight of the 4000D-X® Composite™ further expands Utility’s lead in providing customers the lightest weight, most productive trailers on the road. The bonded construction of the composite side wall combines Utility’s patented sheet and post design with the foam technology benefits pioneered in the industry-leading #1 selling 3000R® reefer.

The same aluminum exterior side skin panels used with Utility’s time-proven 3000R® reefer now gives the 4000D-®X Composite™ operator additional weight savings without compromising the side wall strength or the 101” minimum wearband-to-wearband inside width of the trailer.

The polyurethane foam core of the 4000D-X® Composite™ structurally bonds the interior lining panels to the outside skin panels providing side wall durability, strength and lower tare weight. The primary advantage in Utility’s polyurethane foam core over the polyethylene core found in common plate trailers is that polyurethane has a much lower density. This translates to a lower weight, more productive trailer.

Premium features available standard, not as options or upgrades, with the 4000D-X® Composite™ include an interior that is fitted with fully-recessed vertical logistic posts on 24” centers (minimum) throughout the trailer. Utility’s 80,000 psi interior lining panels are “squeeze” riveted to the outer skin and side posts to form a patented Snag Free™ high-strength, durable wall system. Lining and side post structural fasteners are fully-recessed so they won’t be impacted by cargo or lift trucks.

The first line of defense for the trailer’s sidewall is the wearband. The lower portion of the interior panel of the 4000D-X® Composite™ includes a full-length, one piece 12” high 80,000 psi galvanized steel wearband for added impact protection, strength and stiffness.

Utility’s new 4000D-X® Composite™ also offers the industry’s strongest 27” deep integrated threshold plate. It is fully-welded to both the buckplate and the 24” deep side gussets. Extra floor support is built in, with two 5-1/8” deep steel channel crossmembers that are welded to the slider subframe and the bottom of the threshold plate.

Design Evolution of the D-X®:
Winter 2000. After extensive R&D testing, a new 101” interior width option for the standard plywood dry van model premieres.
Fall 2002. Further enhancements bring inside width to 101¼”; trailer weight reduced by53 lbs. Product named D-X.
Winter 2002. D-X100 option is developed to offer the steel lining with a stiffer wall, especially useful for wall-bearing and logistic-intensive loads.
Summer 2003. Both D-X options use white, pre-painted steel lining, improving interior appearance and illumination.
Summer 2003. Weight savings initiative for D-X101 saves 447 lbs., making the D-X101 only 172 lbs. heavier than a traditional plywood-lined trailer.
Fall 2004. 80,000 GVWR option for D-X100 is released, leaving few options unavailable for the D-X design.
Spring 2006. Base-model dry freight trailer is converted to the D-X101 design.
Summer 2007. The 4000D-X dry van makes Utility Trailer the first trailer manufacturer to offer a qualifying model certified by the EPA as a SmartWay®
trailer.
Fall/Winter 2008. Composite side wall trailer using a polyurethane foam technology benefits pioneered in the #1 selling 3000R®.

Pressure Systems International, manufacturer of the Meritor Tire Inflation System by PSI with ThermAlert technology, has chosen Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co. to receive its inaugural ThermAlert Athena Award. This award will be given each year to the company who does the most to increase the use of ThermAlert, which is designed to sense excessive wheel-end heat buildup and warn the vehicle operator before the excessive heat results in wheel loss, wheel-end failures and possibly dangerous and costly trailer fires.

The award was named “Athena” after the mythical Greek goddess who was considered a champion of protection, craftsmanship, logic and wisdom. “Utility is now offering their customers ThermAlert at no additional cost when MTIS is installed,’ says Tim Musgrave, president and chief executive officer for PSI. ‘We appreciate that Utility recognizes the benefit of this technology in preventing heat-related damage initiating in the wheel end. We believe fleets that have this capability on their trailers will reduce overall costs by preventing out-of-service incidents caused by wheel-end heat buildup.

“PSI says that Utility has furnished more than 400 fleets the ThermAlert product since going standard with it in June 2007. “When we first developed automatic tire inflation systems in 1993, we did not realize that the base of the system could be used for more than just the very important proper inflation of trailer tires,” says Frank Sonzala, executive vice president of PSI, during the presentation to Gareth Macklam and Sal Molina, representing Utility Trailers at the mid-April Fleet Technology event held at PSI’s corporate headquarters in San Antonio. ‘The incorporation of this additional safety item adds a new dimension and even better ROI to an already financially valuable system to the heavy-duty market. We praise Utility Trailers for their dedication to active promotion of the ThermAlert product.”

Macklam says MTIS by PSI with ThermAlert technology is the Utility standard because it makes sense as a safety item and a valuable product in today’s market. ‘With fuel at over $4 a gallon and tire prices rising continually, proper tire inflation is a must, and the insurance of the ThermAlert technology is just an added benefit,” Macklam says. This award adds to another first that Utility Trailers — based in City of Industry, Calif. — has garnered from PSI. They were the first OEM to be awarded The Customer Excellence Award in 2005, which is attributed to the sales of the Meritor Tire Inflation System by PSI.

PARAGOULD, AR, May 28, 2008 — For the fourth time in the last five years, Utility Trailer’s manufacturing plant in Paragould, Arkansas was awarded the Plant Safety Award by the Truck Trailer Manufacturers Association (TTMA). The Paragould facility, established in 1993, was again identified in 2007 by TTMA as having the best overall safety record of all manufacturing facilities identified in the association’s Category A ranking.

This significant safety achievement means that Utility Trailer employees in Paragould, AR performed more than 750,000 work hours in 2007 with limited injuries and illnesses.

The milestone was reached by the 450 employees who work at Utility Trailer’s dry freight trailer assembly plant in Paragould. The year 2007 also marked another plant achievement, the roll-out of the 75,000th dry van manufactured by plant employees.

“As a company and at all five Utility Trailer manufacturing plants, we emphasize disciplined behavior, safe work processes and employee ownership of safety,” says David Neighbors, plant manager at the Paragould facility. “Achieving this annual award for safety performance is significant, but what is truly impressive are the actions and attitudes of every single person at out plant to work safely, year-in and year-out.”

The Paragould AR manufacturing plant also received the annual TTMA Plant Safety Award (Category A) in 2006, 2005 and 2003.

TTMA awards safety winners based on information member companies submit on the OSHA Form 300, which is sent by all manufacturers to the Federal Government by January 31st of each year. TTMA awards for trailer manufacturers are classified in three categories:

1. Category A – More than 750,000 man hours
2. Category B - 300,000 to 750,000 man hours
3. Category C - Fewer than 300,000 man hours

Utility Trailer takes a proactive approach to on-the-job-safety at all five manufacturing plants located nationwide. Routine audits, staff training programs and active safety checks by line supervisors are integral to a safe work environment. If potential safety hazards are identified, Utility Trailer takes prompt action to follow up on incidents and put countermeasures or preventive processes in place. Lift assist devices and mechanical robots are just two examples of tools used to lessen the impacts of physically challenging jobs. Tools and assembly processes are designed to produce the greatest ergonomic benefits. Standardization of processes leads to a more consistent level of performance and reduces the risk of injuries. Best practices in safety are shared within individual plants and with sister plants to promote continuous improvement.

Neighbors also noted that on-the-job safety provides some significant tangible benefits to the company. “In addition to the health and well-being of our employees, our outstanding safety performance translates into fewer schedule disruptions, greater productivity and lower costs associated with lost-time injuries. Our goal is to help Utility Trailer be successful now and down the road, to help extend career longevity for our employees and to boost morale along the way,” added Neighbors.

About Utility Trailer Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company is America’s oldest privately owned and operated trailer manufacturer. It was founded in 1914 by brothers E.W. and H.C. Bennett and is still family-owned to this day. Utility Trailer is the largest producer of refrigerated vans and the third-largest trailer manufacturer in the United States.

The highest strength, lowest weight flatbed ever built by Utility Trailer got lighter but with equal beam strength as the prior workhorse, including an 80,000 lbs. distributed load beam rating. The new optimized design of the 4000A™ features an aluminum/steel composite that reduces tare weight by 400 pounds. It is stronger due to a newly designed 80,000 psi high tensile steel, hat-shaped main beam top flange. And it is more durable and reliable than the 2000A® Flatbed based on a series of both static and dynamic component testing to real-world torture track tests at Utility’s test Research & Development facility in Southern California.

“The innovation behind this new flatbed design goes beyond the strong, light and better messages,” said Jeff Bennett, vice president of engineering and product development for Utility Trailer. “Our goal was to bring to market an optimized flatbed trailer that would provide the maximum return on investment for our customers. We did this by eliminating 400 lbs. of steel and aluminum on the base model flatbed, which not only reduced material costs, but enabled the trailer to carry more payload.”

“With fuel costs and operating demands rising, this new model offers owner-operators and fleets a fuel efficient and durable alternative to other light weight flatbeds,” added Jeff Bennett.

The reengineered 4000A™ delivers the value and durability of the Utility Trailer brand, and offers such features/benefits as:

Hendrickson Narrow Hanger AANT 23k Spread Air Ride Suspension to lower the trailer weight and increase its strength.

80,000 PSI High Tensile Steel, Hat-Shaped Main Beam Top Flange for increased beam strength.

6,500 lbs. Working Load Limited Rated Pipe Spools, which surpass DOT requirements for load securement points.

Aluminum side rails with integral sliding winch track for increased versatility and load security

Rear-drag reduction device provides fuel savings as much as 5%

Louisville, KY, March 27, 2008 – A rear-drag reduction device, ATDynamics’ new aerodynamic TrailerTail®, will be attached to the rear of the industry’s first EPA Certified SmartWay® trailer, a 4000D-X® Dry Van built by Utility Trailer, and showcased in the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay® booth (#13052, North Wing) at the Mid-America Trucking Show, March 27-29, in Louisville, Kentucky.

ATDynamics developed the collapsible TrailerTail® extension to meet the durability and usability requirements of long-haul trucking operations, while dramatically cutting emissions and fuel costs by as much as 5%. The TrailerTail® also improves vehicle safety by providing additional stability and reduced spray at the rear of the trailer.

Third-party SAE J1321 testing conducted by Robert Transportation at Energotest 2007 in Montreal, Canada showed that the TrailerTail® boosts fuel efficiency by 5.1% at 62 mph. At 68 mph the TrailerTail® yields potential efficiency gains of greater than 6%. Based on average long-haul trailer mileage, the TrailerTail® can deliver more than a billion dollars in fuel savings annually to the North American trucking industry.

The TrailerTail® is constructed of lightweight, rugged panels designed to endure daily wear and driver abuse, yet ensure smooth opening and closing. A patented TrailerTail® hinge system allows truckers to operate doors and access loading bays normally. The TrailerTail® collapses from four feet to two inches in length in less than 8 seconds.

“The least aerodynamic way to carry goods down the highway is in a large rectangular box,” explained Andrew Smith, CEO of ATDynamics, Inc. “Forward-thinking fleet operators are now serious about improving the aerodynamics of their fleets. Starting with the TrailerTail® and with other products now in the pipeline, our goal is to dramatically improve the sustainability of the global freight industry.”

ATDynamics is an affiliate of the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay® Transport Partnership, a voluntary program which accelerates the trucking industry’s efforts to conserve fuel and reduce emissions.

High-Strength Inner and Outer Panels Deliver Greater Durability

LOUISVILLE, KY, March 27, 2008 - Engineered for strength and productivity, the 4000D-X® Dry Van from Utility Trailer is built to deliver. Top-to-bottom, side-to-side, the trailer’s thin-wall design integrates exceptional strength and the lowest tare weight to reduce fleet operating and maintenance costs while extending the useful life of the equipment.

Showcased for the first time at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, KY, Utility’s patented and post panel design now features a new proprietary composite wall for less impact damage and greater durability. The Utility sidewall panel design features a high-density polyurethane foam construction “sandwiched” between the high-strength inner and outer skins, forming a composite that securely bonds them together. The result is stronger, stiffer composite panel that absorbs more energy.

The new composite panel design of Utility’s 4000D-X® sidewall is an efficient, lightweight and stronger panel that provides a perfect upgrade from conventional plate trailers.

80,000 psi galvanized steel interior panels are part of composite that offers more durability and less maintenance

Polyurethane foam core bonds the outer skin with the inner lining panel to uniformly absorb the sidewall load; and when coupled with Utility’s heavy duty wearband options it extends the trailer’s duty cycle.

Improved thin-wall composite design extends life of trailer, reduces maintenance costs and provides a higher resale value

When introduced in 2004, the 4000D-X® raised the thin-wall standard for dry vans. It features Utility’s patented SnagFreeTM recessed posts for damage-resistant loading and includes many high-quality standard features to outwork and outlast the competition, including a stainless steel rear door frame and flush mounted galvanized steel logistics posts with fully recessed squeezed fasteners for greater durability. A long list of Utility 4000D-X® features exceeds industry standards.

Every aspect of the 4000D-X® has been engineered with the road and dock in mind. Real-world torture track testing to the extreme limits ensures maximum performance and durability.

When configured with proven aerodynamic enhancements such as low-rolling resistance tires, side skirts and a front-mounted gap reducer or rear-drag reduction device. An EPA Certified SmartWay ®4000D-X trailer reduces emissions, increases fuel efficiency and improves the bottom line.

To qualify for SmartWay® certification, a trailer must achieve 6.5% or greater total fuel savings.

Growing Portfolio of Bendix® brand components becoming standard on Utility Trailer models

City of Industry, CA - March 26, 2008 - A mutual commitment to advance highway safety for the tractor-trailer industry has resulted in a new multi-year relationship between industry-leaders, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company.

The agreement with Utility Trailer, the third-largest trailer manufacturer and the nation’s largest producer of refrigerated vans, further solidifies the growing Bendix position as a supplier to the trailer industry. It also establishes that Bendix products will be available through Utility’s aftermarket parts and extensive dealer network, enabling the two companies to offer and support high-quality, top-performing air brake system solutions.

Integrated Drum Brake Solutions

Effective April 2008, Bendix® SB-4TM combination spring brakes will be standard position on all Utility Trailer models. The Bendix® SB-4 combination spring brake - featuring a patent pending center seal - contains a guided spring-pressure plate that significantly reduces diaphragm and seal wear. Flexible, self-alignment of the center seal during installation - along with lubricant retention during operation - combine to offer extended spring brake service life.

Already proven, and as standard on all Utility models, is the Bendix® ASA-5® automatic slack adjuster. The ASA-5 slack adjuster exceeds the Society of Automotive Engineers’ 200,000-cycle durability test standard, assuring long service life. Its seals and lubricants are proven to resist external moisture and contaminants that can cause premature wear.

Both the Bendix® SB-4TM combination spring brake and Bendix® ASA-5® slack adjuster are provided by Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC - a joint venture between Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC and Dana Commercial Vehicle Products, LLC.

Available Second Half of 2008

Beginning July 2008, Utility Trailer will offer as standard position on base model dual axle reefers and dry vans, the Bendix® SR-5® spring brake relay valve, in combination with the Bendix® TABS-6 antilock braking system . The SR-5 valve provides premium performance under extreme conditions. The valve’s design offers the fastest spring brake release and is widely recognized as the leading spring brake valve available in the market today.

The Bendix® TABS-6 ABS for trailers was chosen to allow Utility Trailer an easy upgrade into the next-generation trailer stability system, Bendix® TABS-6 Advanced. Both are built on a reliable single-channel, 2S/1M configuration - the most popular ABS design for today’s trailer manufacturers and buyers.

Utility will also offer the Bendix® ADB22XTM air disc brake, as a databook option. This lightweight air disc brake package reduces total wheel-end weight while providing fast and easy pad replacement, reduced maintenance, and longer brake life.

Working Together to Advance Technology

Utility’s introduction to Bendix began while operating a manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom.
“We came to recognize Knorr-Bremse, the European affiliate of Bendix, as a global leader in the heavy duty industry,” said Craig Bennett, senior vice president for sales and marketing, Utility Trailer. “We recognize those same qualities in Bendix through its development of North American trailer products, many of those products offer great synergies to our customer base running Bendix equipped trucks.”

“Our relationship with Utility Trailer demonstrates our permanent commitment to the trailer market,” said Joe McAleese, Bendix president & CEO. “We’ve made an extensive investment in the manufacturing and testing of our trailer technology that will enable us to stay aligned with our long-term objective of becoming a provider of superior solutions for the trailer market. Our customers demand the best solutions and we are providing them.”

Bendix offers a complete portfolio of trailer products and solutions, all designed for maximum performance and reliability. Bendix strives to create long-term partnerships within the trailer market by going beyond simply offering braking components for trailer applications, but instead delivering a complete, integrated system and excellent customer service.

About Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC
